Hi! Welcome to our FIRST THURSDAY THIRTEEN!! Mom told us that our first T13 should be educational for everyone so we picked a topic that we already knew a lot about and decided to list “13 FACTS ABOUT CATS.”
Here goes…
- Cats use more than 500 muscles to leap, jump and sprint.
- A cat has 230 bones in its body. People only have 206.
- Cats have 4 rows of whiskers.
- Cats can sprint about 31 miles per hour.
- In ancient Egypt, a person could receive the death penalty for killing a cat.
- Cats will practically never meow at other cats. They save their meowing for humans.
- Cats can’t move their jaws sideways.
- A 15 year old cat has likely spent 10 years of its life asleep.
- Cat brains are more similar to human brains than dog brains are.
- Cats make about 100 different vocal sounds. By way of comparison, dogs only make about 10.
- A cat will spend almost a third of its life grooming itself.
- A cat’s ear can pivot 180 degrees. Cats use their hearing a lot like radar.
- Cats can jump 7 times their own height.
But you probably already knew all of these, didn’t you???? 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing these cat facts. I didn’t know these. I went and asked the “PhD” mom and she had no clue either. Oh well, you know what they say about PhD people . . .
[…] blkcatgal is a wealth of unprecedented information. The last post on Our First Thursday Thirteen! is highly regarded. Here’s a brief overview: […]
Hey, our Zoolatry Human has some disagreement with and question about with No. 13: is that jumping “up” or jumping “down”? She says neither of us are very accomplished jumpers and she has seen us both fall more often than not (maybe it’s all the long fur that gets in the way?). We wouldn’t do well at all in Track & Field at the Olympics for sure; our max height is maybe three-foot?
And we tend to scream on the way down, too!
There were a few we did not know! We didn’t know that a person could receive the death penalty for killing a cat. Cats were quite highly regarded in Eqypt so that shouldn’t surprise us.
Our Momma thinks that #6 about meowing is very interesting! Sabrina will meow when she wants to play, but she is always in the other room, so it isn’t directly meowing at us. And she is a big groomer, so #11 definitely fits her! #4 sprinting and #11 jumping are Simon all the way! Me, I’m into the #6 sleeping thing … hee hee!
Purrs and headbutts,
Sam
about number 13 – lard butt Miles can barely jump 2 feet!
Wow, what a great Thursday Thirteen! Very informative!
What a great list of kitty facts!
Great first TT13!
Momma is always telling us that we use our ears like radar.
Purrsssss
That’s a great list! But #3 doesn’t apply to all cats! We Sphynx don’t have any whiskers, and we get along just fine. 🙂
That is really interesting! My mom wants to know though, if we spend 1/3 of our lives grooming, yet 10/15 years are sleeping, when do we play herd of thundering elephants?!
Geez, Dragonheart & Merlin…we learned something else today. We didn’t know Sphynx kitties don’t have whiskers! We’ll have to add that tidbit of information to our next cat facts list!
Wally, Ernie & Zoey
Very cool T-13. I feel somewhat more important now. We felines really should run the world. Well, no, that would require too much work.
What an excellent T13 – well done!
Hey! We just realized that you guys live in the Mitten State, too. Sweet!
Interesting list of facts. I learned a bunch of new things today. Thanks.
