black cat looking out window

Hi guys. So here I was the other day…sitting and watching the goings-on in the ‘hood. When something caught my eye.

black cat looking at bird

Can you see it? It’s probably hard for you to tell because this is a crappy picture…but there was a bird…a mourning dove to be exact…sitting on the corner of the gutter. I sat and watched it for awhile. And then it got up and flew away.

And then guess what I saw.

A nest…with 2 eggs! In the gutter! So now we’ll have baby mourning doves to watch. The gutter’s not the best place to have a nest so I hope those eggs hatch soon.

Then I saw something flying around the window but on the inside. The mom saw it, too. It was a bee or wasp of some sort. Now let me tell you all something. The mom doesn’t like killing bugs and stuff. But she doesn’t want them in our house either because she’s afraid I might try to play with them…and she’s a little bit scared of them, too.

So she caught it in a plastic container and I got a good look at it up close. Yeah, I’m not sure I wanna play with that thing. Flies…yes…wasps…no. The mom took it outside and let it go…to live and sting another day.

It was just another fun day on the island.

  1. You will have some good Bird TV watching those eggs hatch. I hope you don’t get a lot of rain though or they may be born with webbed feet!

  2. What fun to have those eggs right in full view. We also hope you don’t get a lot of rain. You all have a wonderful day. Keep your eyes on the eggs.

  3. How cool! We used to have morning doves that nested in one of Mom’s plants. They haven’t come back the last couple of years.

  4. not a big fan of bugs in the house either…

  5. Oh let’s hope Mom Dove doesn’t regret her decision to build a nest THERE……C’mon babies – hatch and fly away before a BIG RAIN. As for that wasp – YUCK. They are scary and we think this will be a HUGE year for wasps and yellow jackets because we’re seeing WAY MORE than usual. All the rain and lush landscape probably. Whatever the reason we’re ON WATCH!

    Hugs, Teddy

  6. Wow, you have so many interesting things to look at on the Island, Ernie! Yay for baby doves, but a boo hiss for the wasp!

  7. Oh, the variety you have in your life, Ernie. LOVE the little nest, but why are those doves so sad?
Are they really mourning something, haha?
We love them, too, and have two who make mama feed them every day.

  8. What a bunch of Mother Nature’s critters for you to engage with, Ernie! Hope you aren’t having any of the flooding that’s going on nearby…we are dry too, but the rivers and lakes are really at a high level!

  9. A dove with a next and two eggs. Keep and eye on that. Cute.

I would have done the same with the wasp. Killing it would have been cruel.

Have a purrfect day and week. My best to your mom. ♥

  10. mom says any bug dumb enough to come IN the house does so at it’s own risk

  11. Oh, Ernie, I think that’s the best bird tv ever and how lucky you are to have a dove around and your mom is so much alike Granny. She brings them all outside too. Sometimes she gets her fan and shows the bugs the way out and they obey 😀 Pawkisses for a Happy Day

  12. Bugs are not welcome here either… You’ll have an interesting Bird TV very soon ! Purrs

  13. dood….we R troo lee sorree ya had ta look out de window N see what ya saw ~~~~~~~~~~

    ☺☺♥♥

  14. Wow, nest in your gutter!!!! We have swallow’s nests in our eaves but unless you go out in the backyard and look up we cannot see them. Lucky you. We will have to follow the eggs with you.

  15. Eek, a wasp! Ringo has come close to biting one of those and it scared us silly. Glad yours was caught and removed.

  16. Watching those baby birds will be fun, but watching bugs we could do without! 🙂

  17. Wow, that was some day! Praying for no rain in your neighborhood for a good while! Silly momma dove.

  18. I don’t wanna mess with those wasps either, they are not really fun Ernie!

  19. We dont like those buzzy wasps either. Ugh. Wow baby birds would be fun to see hatch and, as they say, fly away

  20. Those birdies will be fun to watch since they’re so up close! Those stingy bugs don’t get treated as nice here as they do at your house.

  21. My dad is horribly allergic to wasps so I would have had a meltdown!

  22. Very cool about the nest. I am not as nice as your mom I would have killed the wasp.

  23. I am worried about the dove’s eggs. I wish I knew why they use flat roll-y places today them. Once at work, a mom dove laid her two eggs right on a LEDGE!

  24. Ernie, to tell the truth, doves aren’t too smart when it comes to building nests. Remember last year here when the wind blew a nest to the ground and the two eggs were lost? At least in the gutter they might have a better chance to hatch.

Our mom is a catch-and-release type too. Good that your mom was clever enough to catch that thing!

  25. Ernie, you have such a great view! I hope it works out well for those eggs.

Thank goodness your mom was able to catch that wasp!

  26. Ohhh, soon you will have some new tender baby snacks.

  27. Whoa! TW is terrified of stinging insects cos she’s been stung. Dunno how your mom got it in the jar. Did she wend it to Cincinnati? TW was just watching a video of all the bees that invaded their ball park.

  28. Ernie, your new house has some great TV! have fun on “nest watch”. we have big ugly paper wasps around here and if they get in the house, our mom freaks out. minnie played with one once and had a swollen paw soovenir.

pip, minnie, hollie, sharpie, ditto, TL

  29. WOW! A mourning dove and her nest! It will be very exciting to see the hatchlings 🙂 XO

the critters in the cottage xo

  30. Yeah Ernie, mommy doesn’t like bugs in our house either. Can’t wait fur the birds to hatch. Enjoy watchin’ it. Big hugs

    Luv ya’

  31. How cool that you’re going to get Baby Birdie TV! You are right, I don’t think that bug would be fun to play with.

  32. A mourning dove is one of the housekeeper’s favorite birds. How cool is it you get to watch the eggs hatch. Hope all goes well! – Tom x

  33. So much excitement going on around your house! A couple years in a row, we had a pigeon that would perch above our storage shed and coo for hours at a time. Bear LOVED it. I thought it was a boy – until the last year, the bird brought back a friend, that was much more vibrant. I kept hoping for a nest – but no.

  34. Wow, the mourning doves are gonna have babies! It’s so exciting! I do hope they will be born and raised safely.
And no…you don’t wanna play with that bug for sure!

  35. That nest will provide lots of hours of entertainment for you soon, Ernie. It use to be that once in a while one of those stinger flying bugs would get in our house and it was so funny to watch Mom freak out big time trying to get it out.

  36. If it rains, that next is going to get pretty wet! Those wasps are dangerous!

  37. What great news being able to hopefully watch the little chicks hatch. You have great bird tv Ernie. .x

  38. You mom is very kind.

  39. so nice you try not to kill them! i do the same thing!!

  40. Your Mom is very kind to move the wasp outside. Mom kills wasps & bees (and other bitey stingy things) that venture into our house.
Now those birdies, those would be fun to play with. It will be fun for you to watch them grow up.

  41. How exciting that you get to watch that nest and eggs, Ernie. We hope they hatch before any significant water events!

Good job by Mom Sue to get rid of that flying thingy!

  42. I hope those birdies hatch before a storm comes along. My meowmy doesn’t like hurting bugs either. She usually picks them up in a tissue and puts them outside. But there are times when a bug is really big, so she gets a glass and a small cardboard. Puts the glass over the bug, pushes the cardboard under the glass and then pitches their lil buggy ass out the door.

  43. Dat are some pawesome bird TV!! Mama are da same her catches all da stuffs and puts it outside. Daddy finks her are cray cray 😉

    xoxo,
    Matilda (& Matt)

  44. Oh! WoW! Morning Doves! We got those! he one the hawk just about got last week has been hanging around our deck and it sits in the tree just outside the bedroom window. Ninja and I like to tel it how much we would like to “play” with it! I bet the babies will be fun to watch.

  45. Wasps are scary things, Ernie. Glad Mom Sue got rid of it. Those eggs are in a precarious spot. Sure hope they hatch and you get to see baby morning doves. We have lots of adults in our yard, but have never seen any babies. Keep us posted. XOCK, angel Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy and Sawyer

  46. Darn, we have covered gutters!

  47. Wow, that’s talent to catch a bug like that! Bet it was fun to watch her do that.
