Ernie and Wally are part of Mount Rushmore

Hey guys! Wally here. Today is Presidents’ Day in the U.S. of A…a day to honor the presidents of our country. It’s a national holiday that occurs the 3rd Monday of every February.

To celebrate, me and Ernie thought we’d shared some fun facts about one of our country’s national monuments…Mount Rushmore…that pays tribute to 4 of our past presidents.

  • Mount Rushmore…also known as President’s Mountain…is located in the Black Hills of Keystone, South Dakota.

Mount Rushmore is in South Dakota

  • The sculpture was carved into the granite rock and includes the faces of 4 famous presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. These 4 were chosen because of their significant contributions to the founding, expansion, preservation and unification of our country.
    • George Washington was chosen because he was our nation’s founding father.
    • Thomas Jefferson signed the Louisiana Purchase which significantly expanded our country, and he was the author of the Declaration of Independence.
    • Theodore Roosevelt represented the industrial development of the country, and was also known for his conservation efforts.
    • Abraham Lincoln was chosen because he led the country through the Civil War, and believed in preserving and uniting the country at any cost.
  • Mount Rushmore was the idea of a local historian Doane Robinson who thought it would be a good way to promote tourism in South Dakota.
  • Gutzon Borglum, a famous Dutch-American sculptor, was selected for the Mount Rushmore project. When he died in March 1941, his son Lincoln took over the project.
  • Carving began on October 4, 1927 and finished 14 years later on October 31, 1941.
  • Over 400 workers were involved in the carving. Amazingly, there were no fatalities during the course of the project.
  • The monument is 60 feet high. Each of the President’s heads are the height of a six-story building. Their eyes are 11 feet across, their noses are 20 feet long and their mouths are 18 feet wide.
  • The whole project cost $989,992.32.

Though me and Ernie think Mount Rushmore would look pretty good with our faces on it, here’s a picture of what it really looks like.

The real Mount Rushmore

Impressive, isn’t it? The mom has never visited Mount Rushmore, but it is on her list of things to see. How ‘bout you? Have you ever visited Mount Rushmore?

Happy Presidents’ Day!

  3. Wally and Ernie, you two look great up there on Mount Rushmore! Have never been there, but have watched the movies “North By Northwest” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, both of which feature Mount Rushmore rather prominently!

  4. Oh I do think YOUR version of Mt. Rushmore is WAY more handsome than the real thing BUTTTT yes my Mom would love to visit that wonderful monument one day. She’s seen a lot of stuff but not that!

    Love, Angel Sam

  12. Oh you two sure make two great presidents. Love that you have joined those other presidents. You all have a Happy Presidents day.

  13. I have been there several times. You are much farther away viewing it, than the pictures would have you believe. They had big metal binoculars on the sidewalk wall, so you could see it better up close. I don’t remember if I had to put a dime into them or not. They looked like big parking meters with eyeholes.

  14. Very interesting! I think I learned some new things today. 🙂 I’ve never been there either, but it might be cool to see one of these days.

  15. I keep thinking, they would not do that now, not because of the unsettled political climate, but because of the sheer expense, safety issues, who would they add in or leave out. It certainly got me thinking.

Thank you for a great post that told me such a lot here in New Zealand.

  16. It’s hard to believe that Mt. Rushmore is less than 100 years old – my human says it feels like it has always been there. Well, it has for her lifetime at least! We had no idea that the creator was the son of immigrants. The area he was born in 1867 was not even a state yet.

  17. My parents have visited it. I’d like to see it someday. I read about its creation–really an interesting story. The sculptor had plans for much more.

  18. There should be a mountain with great cats on it too.

  19. That’s very interesting ! We think that Mt Rushmore looks terrific with your faces, though. Purrs
