Come Fly With Us!Hi guys! Today’s a special day in the blogosphere. It’s “Come Fly With Me Day” in honor of our pal Sammy, from One Spoiled Cat. Sammy hasn’t been feeling well lately…he’s dealing with the effects of aging and all the problems that it brings. He and his peeps are hoping he still has some more good days ahead of him.

Sammy is well known in the blogosphere for his Tuesday Teasers where he posts a photo taken somewhere in the world and then challenges all of us to guess the location. We rarely guess correctly, but we always have lots of fun pawticipating.

In honor of Sammy, it was decided to have this special “Come Fly With Me Day”…a day that we post a photo of some place around us where we think Sammy would love to visit. This day was the brain-child of Easy the Weimaraner, who sadly went to the Rainbow Bridge very unexpectedly just the other day before he could see his idea come to fruition. We dedicate this post to both Sammy and Easy.

Grosse Isle Lighthouse

Can you guess where this photo was taken, Sammy? If you guessed on our island of Grosse Ile, you’d be right!

Here on our island we have a lighthouse that was originally called the Grosse Isle North Channel Front Range Light. It was built in 1906 and sits on the northeast side of the island. It stands 40 feet high and for years it helped guide ships through the north channel of the Detroit River. There was also a North Channel Rear Range Light but that was discontinued in 1917, and the Front Range Light was renamed the Grosse Isle Lighthouse. The keeper of the lighthouse was a man by the name of James Story who was in charge of the lighthouse until it was automated in 1921. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1963 and later bought by the Grosse Ile township for only $350. The beautiful octagonal white tower is still in good shape, each face is sided with horizontal wood strips like clapboards on an old house. It’s currently maintained by the Grosse Ile Historical Society who offers tours. The mom hasn’t been on one yet but plans to when the next one is scheduled.

Sammy Kimmel

Sammy, we hope you enjoyed flying with us and seeing our island’s only remaining lighthouse. We  you and purr that there’re still some good days ahead for you.
