Wally-PetBeastroLogo (1)Hey humans, I don’t know about you, but I can tell you the mom is almost fanatical when it comes to what she feeds us.  She wants us to eat only the highest quality foods.  That’s because she knows how important good nutrition is for us and our health.  The mom wants to keep us around for a long time.  So when the mom was recently contacted by The Pet Beastro asking if she would like a nutrition consult for us in exchange for an honest review, the mom jumped at the chance.

Before I tell you all about the nutrition consult we had…let me tell you a little bit about The Pet Beastro.

The Pet Beastro was founded to help people learn why alternative pet food options are better for us cats and dogs.  They feel it’s important that pet owners understand what you’re feeding your pet and the nutritional support it provides to maintain health and longevity.  The Pet Beastro store is located in the Detroit, Michigan area…where we live…and offers the biggest selection of raw pet food in the area as well as other holistic food options.

But The Pet Beastro sells more than just healthy pet foods and treats…they have holistic supplements and essential oils, too.  They offer classes on holistic foods and supplements, and services like holistic health assessments…including the nutrition consult that we had…pet chiropractic care and much more.  Orders for food and some of the services can be done by phone or on-line.

What’s a Nutrition Consult?

A nutrition consult is a 30 minute session where you discuss with a Pet Beastro holistic nutrition expert your pet’s current diet and any health concerns your pet may have.  The nutrition expert reviews alternative food options with you, and comes up with a nutrition plan that will help your pet reach and maintain optimal wellness.  The consult can be done in purrson at The Pet Beastro store, but don’t worry if you don’t live near The Pet Beastro.  Consults can be done by Skype or Google+ or over the phone, too…whatever’s most convenient for you.  A day or so after the session, you’ll receive a comprehensive report with a suggested and customized menu of healthy options to feed your pet based on his or her needs.  The cost of a consult is $39.

Our Nutrition Consult

Since we live about 45 minutes from The Pet Beastro, the mom decided to meet with our nutrition expert, Miss Erica, in purrson.  And y’know what?  I got to go, too!

The mom and I met with Miss Erica who is not a veterinarian but has lots of experience and training in pet nutrition.  Miss Erica asked about the foods the mom feeds us and any health issues we have. For the most part, we eat pretty good…grain free wet foods with some freeze-dried raw.  But we do eat some dry food…’specially Zoey who has megacolon and eats a high fiber prescription diet dry food.  Miss Erica wasn’t thrilled with the prescription diet food and gave the mom suggestions on some other healthier dry foods that are high in fiber to try.  She even gave us samples to try…lots of samples!

Miss Erica also suggested that the mom add goat’s milk to our food because it’s rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and is very beneficial to overall health.  And she recommended a probiotic for us, and a supplement for Zoey to help with her constipation issues.  We haven’t taken to the goat’s milk, but we liked the food samples that Miss Erica gave us.  The mom started us on the probiotic, too.

So what did the mom and I think about the nutrition consult?  We thought it was well worth it.  Miss Erica was so helpful.  She took her time, was very thorough in her assessment and answered all of the mom’s questions.  She explained why some foods weren’t healthy options for us.  When the mom later emailed her about issues we were having with the goat’s milk, Miss Erica responded quickly with some suggestions and sent us more samples of food for us to try.

If you’re thinking about having a consult, we say go for it.  You definitely will learn about healthier options to feed your pet.

  1. Wow, with our variety of ages, sizes and “pickinesses”, this sounds like something we could use! Thanks for sharing this awesome service!

  2. Oh that sounds like a great idea. WE would love to do that. But we need to check prices etc. I don’t know how she would handle our group. There are so many of us here all with different problems. But we sure are going to look into all this. Great review.

  3. This sounds like a great way to improve everyones health.

  4. ARE YOU KIDDING!?! The Pet Beastro is close enough to my office, that I can visit on my lunchtime, and I have just once. I was blown away by everyone’s desire to help my cats! However, I haven’t dived into an official consult yet, because I’m wanted to take Chuck to the vet for his follow-up visit for his heart issue. Giving him pills for his heart AND for his supposed irritable bowel is not making me happy; I believe the right food is where it’s at for him. The vet visit is this Saturday. Okay, sorry about the long comment…

  5. Great review…our mom is always looking for more natural and holistic things for us. It can be challenging when you need many different things in your household! We are shocked that you don’t like the goat milk…we love it! Are you getting the canned stuff, or from the regular milk section in the grocery? We preferred the regular carton goat milk from the refrigerator section.

  6. I may have to schedule a consult for Thompson… he’s really been struggling the past few years and I’ve tried to feed him a healthier diet. it would be nice to have some expert advice…

  7. I find the whole topic of pet nutrition very interesting. I sure wish we had a place like The Pet Beastro in our area!

  8. WOW Wally…….sounds like that was well worth the visit! I also think you might have a teeny crush on Miss Erika? You look pretty happy in her arms!

Hugs and good luck with the new foodables.
    Love, Sammy

  10. “Miss Erica wasn’t thrilled with the prescription diet food and gave the mom suggestions” this made my raw feeding heart happy.. 🙂

I went to their website and was a little disappointed that the ‘cat shoppe” had the same link as the ‘dog shoppe’ and once there under healthy pet food they only list dog options, but it is a start. It is so nice they reached out to a cat blogger, and that there were options for you. Hopefully they can make it a little easier for customers to find cat options on their website so they can see just how much of a demand there is out there.

    • Miss Connie, when we go to their website, under healthy pet foods are options for “dog foods” and “cat foods.” Clicking on cat foods gives cat food options. But you’re right, that the drop down list focuses only on dog products. We’ll mention this to them.

  11. What a pawsome service, that sounds really interesting ! It looks like your visit was worth of it. Purrs

  12. Looks like Miss Erica and Wally were bonding! Good interview. Our major food problem is trying to get picky eater Mickey to eat before our new cat Rufus snarfs up everything!

  13. what a wonderful thing this store is doing…we wish there were more places like this. we would like a consult – just to see if there was anything more we could be doing for the wide ranges of ages we have here

  14. This stuff sounds super tasty!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!

  15. Interesting. Ours are all on vet prescribed diets. I think this is a good idea, though.

  16. Wally you were smooching away! You must have liked what the nutritionist told you.
This was very interesting and we are glad it was so helpful to you!

  17. Very cool. It’s great to know that there are trained people who will help you learn about good nutritional choices for your kitties. I

  18. What a great thing. And clearly some kitteh was smitten with the consultant. 🙂

  19. That sounds like a great service. Our biggest problem is that Moosey is a very picky guy, and because of his age and various health issues, we just can’t afford to experiment right now.

  20. With four kitties of different ages and needs I would love to learn more about this. My oldest has special needs due to kidney disease and my youngest is picky and over weight but I can not get her to eat anything but dry food and I know this is not good for her.

  21. This sounds like a great service! I wish I could go there like you did, Wally, but it is a little far for me!

  22. Wow, what a cool service. I think that would be good for any pet, there is so much to learn about nutrition. I think Samantha with her hyperthyroid and fussiness could use some help!

  23. That is very cool gang and I didn’t know they had other things and did all of that.

  24. First of all, we’re very jealous that Miss Erica got a smooch from you Wally! She’s so lucky! We’d love a nutrition consult since our Mommy is clueless on what to feed us since we’re so picky. She worries that we’re eating the wrong stuffs but doesn’t know how to change it. Also, Isabella swallows her food whole so Mommy is afraid of feeding her raw foods. Anyway, we’re crossing our paws we win and that they say we should get even more treats than we do now!

  25. We hope it passes our discriminating taste, hehehe!

  26. Sounds like a very caring company.

  27. Yous so cute Wally. What a gweat posty. Glad y’all learned so much and even got samples. Weez wuld luv to win this. Weez gunna have to check out dat there Bistro. And by da way, weez luv yous bloggy.

    Luv ya’

  28. our mom is a fanatic about our foods too! she would love to have a Pet Beastro here – that store looks amazing! Your nutrition consult sounded totally pawsome, Wally! It sounds like you got alot out of it and the cost isn’t bad at all. our mom got some goat’s milk but Wriggley mostly had it and not us kiities. she was worried it might upset our tummies…now maybe she’ll give it another try with us. thanks for sharing about this and having the give away on the consult. our mom may check into it even if we don’t win. good luck to everybuddy!

    pip, smidgen, minnie, hollie

  29. HAH! the consult is $39 and the diet and supplements she recommends is $500 a month! Am I right? Just kidding—I hope. Hope the new diet works for you.

  30. This sounds like a terrific service!

  31. Sounds like you had a fun visit and got lots of useful information during your consult.

  32. This sounds very interesting. We’ll have to look into this for our old guy. And thanks for the giveaway. Go for the goats milk. I grew up on a small dairy goat farm and would feed the cats milk right from the animal every morning and evening. All the cats loved the milk and would try to get the squirts of milk first. All our cats were quite healthy and lived to be over 15 years old.

  33. What a yummy store!!!

  34. Goodness! Wally you are practically flirting with Miss Erica!! I can’t imagine there being anything like that here in the UK!!

  35. R internetz thiz week haz been like a lite switch…off…on…off…on….out…..stoppin bye two say Hi while de spazzed thing iz still….ON~~~~~~

  36. Hi Wally, it’s so cool that you got to go to the nutrition consult with your mom! We would love to hear what they suggested for Zoey’s constipation.

Carmine has FLUTD and IBD, so I’d definitely be interested in what they might suggest for him. I’d also be interested in what suggestions they’d have for Lita and getting her weight down a bit.

  37. I love the idea of in person nutritional consults. I’m big on pre and probiotics for all but not keen on giving cats too many different samples in too short a time.

  38. That sounds like a healthy use of your time Wally 🙂 And you look so cute in Miss Erica’s arms! 🙂

  39. You had us at “Pet nutritionist”!!

  40. Gee Wally, you really had a purrsonal interview 😉
We think Miss Erica likes you 😉

  41. I know that this is a cat blog (and I have a gorgeous big tuxedo cat!), but our nutrition problem is my senior dog Mike. We adopted him in January, so we have no idea really how bad his first 9 or 10 years have been nutrient-wise; though basically anyone could see ‘not good’. Mike has to take meds for his seizures that make him sleepy and now he’s super fat, which is bad for him, help!

    • The Pet Beastro does nutrition consults for dogs and cats. We’re sure they could recommend an appropriate food for Mike to help him lose weight.

  42. What a wonderful idea. There are so many foods on the market that we wonder what is really best for us.
